using my cell as a Skype webcam

using my cell as a Skype webcam
I know I’ve posted a lot about my Chinese knockoff smartphone lately but it has so many cool little features. The one complaint I have is that every time I find some app I like, geared toward the Sony Ericsson W810i (because that’s how Opera and eBuddy identify the device), it expects there to be a physical keyboard to enter info with and doesn’t pop up an onscreen keypad. Surely there’s some other identifier I could use, some Java phone with WiFi and/or a touchscreen so I can hunt up apps that I can use. Do people really chat with Bluetooth as much as the app lists for the W810i imply, since Class 2 Bluetooth has a range of only 10 meters so you’d be standing within sight of them? Anyhow.

When the phone is plugged into a computer via USB cable, a menu comes up with four options: Mass Storage, COM Port, PictBridge, and Webcam. I have used the mass storage (access to the internal and card memory) many times, I don’t need a tethered modem (and since I don’t use cell data it’d be an unweildy WiFi receiver), I do have a PictBridge printer but no pictures on the camera to print, and then there’s the webcam — which I figured would be easiest to check out using Skype’s cam test function.

As mentioned earlier this phone has two cameras, both 640×480 (so excellent for webcam use but absurdly behind the times for use as a real camera), and this is from the user-facing one because it makes the most sense for this purpose.
